The Online Privacy Foundation (OPF) are a small group of expert volunteers who want to raise awareness of online privacy issue
s through topical research and awareness raising activities. The OPF want to empower people so they can make informed choices about how they use the internet.
The foundation, originating out of Basingstoke (near London) in the United Kingdom formed in 2009 after one of the co-founders, Chris Sumner, a computer security professional, had been asked to talk about Computer Security in his local community and identified a clear gap.
The foundations mission is to promote
safer and more
streetwise internet use within the community and push for
easier to understand privacy and safety controls.
Specifically, the OPF aim to:
- Raise awareness of online privacy issues and empower people to make informed choices about what they do online;
- Help community groups identify local security "experts" who'd be willing to share their knowledge within their communities for free;
- Bring Security "Experts" together to share community awareness material and experiences
